Massive triiodothyronine intoxication: Efficacy of hemoperfusion?

A case of massive accidental triiodothyronine intoxication (1000-fold the usual therapeutic dose, for 8 days) is reported with important disturbances of cardiovascular and central nervous systems that required intensive care support. Serum free triiodothyronine levels were 4789 pmol L-1 on admittance (normal values, 3.5-6.5 pmol L-1). In the absence of a specific treatment, hemoperfusions were performed but failed to accelerate significantly the decay of blood levels of free triiodothyronine (apparent half-life 25.9 hours; 95% confidence interval: 19.8-37.4 hours). The patient, a young woman, made a satisfactory recovery, in spite of important clinical complications.

Neuronal cell cultures: A tool for investigations in developmental neurobiology

The aim of this review is to describe environmental requirements for survival of neuronal cells in culture, and secondly to survey the complex interplay between hormones, neurotrophic factors, transport- and extracellular matrix- proteins, which characterize the developmental program of differentiating neurons. An overall reconsideration of the literature in this vast field is above the limits of the present paper; since progress and refinement in the techniques of neuronal cell cultures have paralleled the advancement in Developmental Neurobiology, we will run instead through the main steps which form the conceptual framework of neuronal cell cultures. © 1992 Plenum Publishing Corporation.

8083 Background: Since early identification of patients (pts) at risk of failure is the mainstay of a risk-adapted therapy, we explored the prognostic impact of the sFLC assay in cHL, whose biology involves ongoing activation of polyclonal B-cells. Methods: Serum samples from 248 untreated cHL pts were tested by the Freelite assay. Median age was 32 yrs (r 15-85), males 47%, stages: I (5%), II (51%), III (17%), IV (27%); B-sympt. 60%, E-disease, 38%; bulky >10 cm, 44%; ESR > 65, 42%; IPS ≥3, 39%.
